Dr. Mary Hughes | Premier Neurology, Greer, SC
Dr. Hughes completed her internship and neurology residency at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. She was in her fellowship in Electrophysiology at the Medical College of Georgia when she got the call that would forever change the focus of her professional career. Her sister had developed double vision and was suspected of having a brain tumor. The good news was that she did not have a brain tumor but the bad news was that she had Multiple Sclerosis.
Dr. Hughes began to focus her career on MS after her sister’s diagnosis. She founded the Augusta MS Center in 2002. As division Chair for Neurology at Greenville Health System from 2009-2015 where she worked to expand access to neurological services upstate of SC. During her time at the health system, she was instrumentally involved in developing the neurology curriculum for the new medical school. In 2015 she opened her private practice, Premier Neurology which has been a Partner in MS Care since 2016. A member of the Board of Trustees for the National MS Society from 2008 to 2019, she chaired the African American Advisory committee from 2008-2019. She was inducted in the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Health Professionals Volunteer Hall of Fame in 2015.
She has presented on the topic of diversity at the Consortium of MS Centers annual meeting and community events on numerous occasions. Her greatest professional joy comes from helping people overcome the challenges of living with MS.
